Latest New Warriors Casting Announcement for Squirrel Girl Leaves This Curvy Woman Cold When Marvel announced back in April it would be pairing up with Freeform to create New Warriors,  a live-action comedy featuring Squirrel Girl, I literally squeed. I had recently read Ryan North and Erica Hendersons  The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Power  for the first time, and my mind was pretty much blown. Three months later, casting has been announced for Squirrel Girl herself, and while any news about this project makes me thrilled about the fact that we are this. much. closer to seeing my personal hero on the small screen, my reaction this time was closer to: via GIPHY and also: via GIPHY So whats the good word? It turns out Marvel has tapped Milana Vayntrub for Squirrel Girl,  who is probably best known for her work as ATT Girl. Here. Let me show you: via GIPHY ATTs Lily is undoubtedly likable. Shes friendly and approachable and totally seems like the type of person who wouldnt make fun of you if you forgot to shave your legs before going out in shorts, failed to stop your daughter from eating cat food, or spilled your chocolate martini all over yourself during a toast with fancy people (all things I have done). Vayntrub herself (the real person) also happens to be an activist, who uses her platform to advocate for Syrian refugees. A  former  refugee herself, whose  family fled the Soviet Union in the late 1980s due to animosity toward the Jewish population, she started #CantDoNothing  last year in order to make it easier for people to donate their time, money, and voices to the cause. I cant  help doing a fist pump (Im from Jersey) when I see someone whos struggled so much, and done so much good, land a role as awesome as Squirrel Girl. At the same time, I cant help but notice that Vayntrub lacks something that seems essential to Squirrel Girl Which brings me to why I adore Squirrel Girl so much. Ive written before about how I came to the comics party late in life, mostly because the average superhero fare didnt appeal to me, and I didnt think the comics world had anything else to offer me. When I eventually started reading comics late last year, I was drawn to series like  Lumberjanes and Giant Days  and, most recently,  Misfit City,  which tended to feature close friendships among kick-ass ladies. When I read the first volume of Squirrel Girl this past April, I was blindsided. She was like no superhero Id ever seen before. Part of it is the comic sensibility of the series itself. I mean: But a lot of my love is  due to the positivity Squirrel Girl just radiates. Its in her self-confidence. Its in the way she supports the people around her. Its in the way she beats the bad guys by appealing to their better nature.   And that positivity includes body positivity. Squirrel Girl doesnt look like any other female superhero Ive seen. Where many other female superheroes look like supermodels or Barbie dolls or department store mannequins come to life, Squirrel Girl just looks like a real girl. With bodacious curves and a conspicuously awesome butt. And she owns it. Which means a lot to someone whos had a complicated relationship with her body for most of her life. Because I come from a background  in which my mom casually mentions how thunder thighs run in the family. Because wearing a maxi dress sometimes makes me feel as if Im cosplaying as a circus tent. Because the lady at the dry cleaner has asked when Im due and, when Ive assured her Im not pregnant, shes asked,  Are you sure?  Because Ive totally been the woman reduced to tears in the fitting room because none of the shops at the mall carry jeans for average-sized women. Squirrel Girl has the unquestioning self-love I  wish  I could have. Shes the me I sometimes am on a good day, when Im rocking my favorite outfit, or when Im doing the most awesome crescent lunge in yoga class, or when Im performing average, everyday feats of strength that remind me of everything my body is capable of. Sometimes, some days, I can love my body. Squirrel Girl seems to effortlessly love every bit of herself every damn day. And for me, thats an important part of who Squirrel Girl  is. Its been gratifying to see an increasing number of curvy female protagonists in the stuff I read, from Willowdean Dickson of Julie Murphys Dumplin  to the women and girls who appear in the comics I mentioned above. In these latter works, the characters body types are an afterthought. Their size does not not relegate them  to the role of humorous sidekick or sassy best friend or larger-than-life comic relief. If only their live-action versions could fare as well. Still, even though Vayntrub doesnt seem to have any  conspicuous  junk in the trunk, I eagerly await the eventual release of  New Warriors.  When it becomes available, I will totally be all via GIPHY as I sprint to the nearest screen. However, Abraham Lincoln is the reason the United States is still united. Abraham Lincoln was a self-made man. As the sixteenth American President, a man of great wisdom and determination, he was determined to end slavery. Lincoln put the importance and devotion for his nation before his own personal convictions. Lincoln wasn’t raised in a wealthy middle class family. He was born dirt-poor in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809. Lincoln grew up self-educated, with a taste for jokes, hard work, and books. He served for a time as a soldier in the Black Hawk War (Abraham Lincoln: Life in Brief. N.d.)3. He was strong minded and strived for himself and everything he wanted to accomplish. In 1834, he won an election to the state legislature and began self-teaching himself law. Lincoln was admitted to the bar in 1836. People usually experience this when they are either forced into new surroundings or they go there of their own free will. This is the 37th time I have spoken to you from this office, where so many decisions have been made that shaped the history of this Nation. Each time I have done so to discuss with you some matter that I believe affected the national interest. In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation. Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me. In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future. But with the disappearance of that base, I now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served, and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged. I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interest of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations. From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation would require. I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interest of America first. America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad. To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home. Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow. Vice President Ford will be sworn in as President at that hour in this office. As I recall the high hopes for America with which we began this second term, I feel a great sadness that I will not be here in this office working on your behalf to achieve those hopes in the next 21/2 years. But in turning over direction of the Government to Vice President Ford, I know, as I told the Nation when I nominated him for that office 10 months ago, that the leadership of America will be in good hands. In passing this office to the Vice President, I also do so with the profound sense of the weight of responsibility that will fall on his shoulders tomorrow and, therefore, of the understanding, the patience, the cooperation he will need from all Americans. As he assumes that responsibility, he will deserve the help and the support of all of us. As we look to the future, the first essential is to begin healing the wounds of this Nation, to put the bitterness and divisions of the recent past behind us, and to rediscover those shared ideals that lie at the heart of our strength and unity as a great and as a free people. By taking this action, I hope that I will have hastened the start of that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America. I regret deeply any injuries that may have been done in the course of the events that led to this decision. I would say only that if some of my Judgments were wrong, and some were wrong, they were made in what I believed at the time to be the best interest of the Nation. To those who have stood with me during these past difficult months, to my family, my friends, to many others who joined in supporting my cause because they believed it was right, I will be eternally grateful for your support. And to those who have not felt able to give me your support, let me say I leave with no bitterness toward those who have opposed me, because all of us, in the final analysis, have been concerned with the good of the country, however our judgments might differ. So, let us all now join together in affirming that common commitment and in helping our new President succeed for the benefit of all Americans. We have unlocked the doors that for a quarter of a century stood between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. We must now ensure that the one quarter of the world’s people who live in the People’s Republic of China will be and remain not our enemies but our friends. In the Middle East, 100 million people in the Arab countries, many of whom have considered us their enemy for nearly 20 years, now look on us as their friends. We must continue to build on that friendship so that peace can settle at last over the Middle East and so that the cradle of civilization will not become its grave. Together with the Soviet Union we have made the crucial breakthroughs that have begun the process of limiting nuclear arms. But we must set as our goal not just limiting but reducing and finally destroying these terrible weapons so that they cannot destroy civilization and so that the threat of nuclear war will no longer hang over the world and the people. We have opened the new relation with the Soviet Union. We must continue to develop and expand that new relationship so that the two strongest nations of the world will live together in cooperation rather than confrontation. Around the world, in Asia, in Africa, in Latin America, in the Middle East, there are millions of people who live in terrible poverty, even starvation. We must keep as our goal turning away from production for war and expanding production for peace so that people everywhere on this earth can at last look forward in their children’s time, if not in our own time, to having the necessities for a decent life. Here in America, we are fortunate that most of our people have not only the blessings of liberty but also the means to live full and good and, by the world’s standards, even abundant lives. We must press on, however, toward a goal of not only more and better jobs but of full opportunity for every American and of what we are striving so hard right now to achieve, prosperity without inflation. For more than a quarter of a century in public life I have shared in the turbulent history of this era. I have fought for what I believed in. I have tried to the best of my ability to discharge those duties and meet those responsibilities that were entrusted to me. I pledge to you tonight that as long as I have a breath of life in my body, I shall continue in that spirit. I shall continue to work for the great causes to which I have been dedicated throughout my years as a Congressman, a Senator, a Vice President, and President, the cause of peace not just for America but among all nations, prosperity, justice, and opportunity for all of our people . There is one cause above all to which I have been devoted and to which I shall always be devoted for as long as I live. When I first took the oath of office as President 51/2 years ago, I made this sacred commitment, to â€Å"consecrate my office, my energies, and all the wisdom I can summon to the cause of peace among nations. † I have done my very best in all the days since to be true to that pledge. As a result of these efforts, I am confident that the world is a safer place today, not only for the people of America but for the people of all nations, and that all of our children have a better chance than before of living in peace rather than dying in war. Nixon’s very effective resignation speech, Ray Price uses logic and emotion to get his point across: that he wanted to resign and protect his name. These are just a couple of examples of logic in this speech. All of the facts that he uses drive his speech to perfection. â€Å"I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so† (Price 1). This was one of the main examples of emotion. He tried to pull at the heart strings of the audience. Ray Price uses this to add to the effectiveness of the speech. Both of these things were used to complement his means to write the speech. He gets his point across using these factors. Utilitarian View on Abortion free essay sample

Utilitarianism is the thought that actions are right if they benefit or bring happiness to a majority of the population. A utilitarian’s view on abortion could be that it is a good thing or a bad thing. They could argue that there is overpopulation in today’s society and around the world people are starving and going thirsty because of overpopulation. A utilitarian would say it would benefit the world’s population if a baby was aborted rather than taking another persons food. Another argument a utilitarian would make is that if a couple could not raise that child or would be alone (single parent) it would be better if they are aborted because it would put less of a burden on society having the mother not be on a welfare or government assistance lessening taxes for others and having the child from a broken home could raise crime and drug addiction having the baby aborted would prevent this from happening. An unloved child would act out and cause a burden on the rest of society. Utilitarian’s would be against abortion if it were damaging society. If there were a low in the amount of babies being born because of abortions it would damage society as a whole because we need people to sustain society. Or if we found that unborn babies sensed the pain of an abortion it would be against utilitarian view because the group of babies was feeling pain. Also an abortion could bring about the death of a great person that affects humanity. What if Einstein was aborted or what if bill gates was aborted? Humanity would be significantly different without those individuals and with that society, as a whole would be affected negatively by abortion. I think that utilitarian’s views on abortion are both correct and incorrect. Babies born to single parents or poor households can increase the probability that that child will become a criminal or a detriment to society. There is a problem with overpopulation in the world and the abortion of unwanted children would help. Society as a whole could benefit from abortions in certain cases. I don’t think everyone who has an unplanned pregnancy should go out and get an abortion because if so many of the great minds of our generation would be but dirt in the ground. A teenage girl who gets pressured into an abortion because of all these statistics could suffer serious depression and issues and would never know if her unborn child could have been the next LeBron James or millionaire who reaches great success even though they suffered through hardships early in there life. A utilitarian view is just unrealistic and there is no way to see if it would benefit society or hurt it. Human potential is endless and people seem to succeed through many hardships daily we should not kill an innocent child because of statistics. You never know what could happen in the future if I have a child they could be the smartest person in the history of the world I would be against abortion if it were my own child. I think people should have a choice to do what they want and the government should not tell people what they can and cannot do with there bodies. Utilitarianism looks too much towards the future and how society will be impacted but there is no way to really know what will happen. You could not allow an abortion to a poor unloving family and that person could become a great influence on humanity or you could allow the abortion and never know. There’s no way to really know if a child will grow up to be a criminal or a great person or just an ordinary person who contributes to keep society moving. People should make there own decisions and if that hurts the rest of society so be it. We cannot foresee the future so utilitarian’s should stop trying to and should start trying to cope with the problems society will face.
